soo.. was a corporate day for dragon boat racing for breast cancer :D
i volunteered to help.. was ok ^___^
was allocated the 'timer/time keeper' role for the races.
sounded bit daunting.. cause the times for the races are quite important.
turned up bright and early at 7am @_@ sigh.. very early start to the day
helped put up the flags on each pole around the harbour.. cable tied it to the pole heh..
then there were a few of us in charge of the time keeping.
theres this main camera thats controlled by the camera dude.. interesting bit of equipment.. looks more like a computer with a lens then those normal cameras you see and buy :)
the camera only takes pics of one thin slot of area.. like the finish line area.. doesnt take pic of anywhere else.
then you can click on the times and enter in the times for each timeslot by order of who went past the finish line first etc.
pretty interesting :D
we still had at least 2 people manually watching the races and writing down the order of the race finishes.. eg. boat 1-6 in order of who went past the finish line from 1st place to 6th.
then double check it with the camera dude.
then there was 1 person with this cool splitter timer.. u can start the timer on the start siren (heard over the walkie talkies :D hehe felt very important ;) ) then you can stop it multiple times to show the times of each boat that went past the finish line..
never seen that kind of machine before hehe.. it prints out the times too
oh and with the camera.. theres 2 remotes that starts the timer on the camera.. a manual one which is a button pressed by the camera/computer dude.. and its also wirelessly pressed by the dude in the start line :D (we were right on the finish line) so the computer would pick up 2 start times and they can just pick any1...
we also had 1 person on the airhorn.. pretty much just to let the rowers know they crossed the line since they cant really tell where the finish line is from theri boat.. and theres not much room to stop and turn around
the jobs were interesting.. pretty simpple and laid back.. there was a race every 10mins or so to record.
got quite hot in the arvo @_@
finished early but.. so all good =) like 2ish
got free food supplied hehe.. muffins/banana bread/fruit/ sandwiches/water
and most of the volunteers are nice too heh.. interesting to see how it all works n stuff :)
wouldnt mind doign it again hehe
